In the heart of Bihar, a culinary revolution is unfolding. JEEVIKA's partnership with the State Health Society has birthed "Didi Ki Rasoi" – women-led canteens serving nutritious, affordable meals in government institutions while creating economic opportunities for rural women.
For years, government hospitals in Bihar struggled with poor food quality from contractors. The need for a reliable, hygienic solution led to this innovative model, first piloted in four districts: Vaishali, Buxar, Sheikhpura, and Purnea.
Women entrepreneurs involved in the project receive comprehensive training in professional food service management, hygiene, and bookkeeping. A structured business plan factors in food pricing, expected footfall, and operational costs, while partnerships with Kudumbashree and hospitality institutions strengthen procurement and operational strategies.
"I used to cook only for my family," shares Meena Devi from Vaishali. "Now I manage a canteen serving hundreds daily. The transformation in my confidence is as significant as the change in my income."
Didi Ki Rasoi has expanded to medical colleges, residential schools, and government offices, creating employment for over 3,952 rural women, including returned migrant workers. Formal agreements with hospitals have standardized operations, ensuring the initiative remains sustainable and scalable.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, these canteens played a critical role in food security while generating ₹35 lakh in revenue, proving their resilience even in crisis.
By bridging the gap between quality food services and women's economic empowerment, Didi Ki Rasoi is not just feeding people; it's nourishing dreams and aspirations.
